1981 - YEAR IN HISTORY

NEWS

President:  Ronald W. Reagan.
Vice President:  George H. W. Bush.
Speaker of the House:  Thomas P. ("Tip") O'Neill, Jr.
Chief Justice:  Warren Burger.
Governor of Va John Dalton.

Hostages Released:  On the day of President Reagan's inauguration, 52 Americans, who had been taken hostage in the embassy 444 days earlier, were released by their Iranian captors.

President Shot:  President Reagan was shot by 25-yr-old John Hinkley, Jr.

Pope Shot:  Pope John Paul II was shot by an escaped Turkish criminal in St Peter's Square.

Space Shuttle Launch:  The space shuttle Columbia launched on first orbital flight...as the world's first reusable spacecraft.

Prince Charles Marries:  Britain's Prince Charles married Lady Diana Spencer in St Paul's Cathedral.

Gasoline Price:  The price rose to a record 1.35/gal, which is  2.62/gal in 2001 dollars!

First Class Stamp Price:  The postage rose from 15 cents to 20 cents in 1981.

ENTERTAINMENT

Top Movies:  Raiders of the Lost Ark, On Golden Pond, The French Lieutenant's Woman, Chariots of Fire, Arthur, Absence of Malice, Reds.
Best Picture:  Ordinary People beat out Coal Miner's Daughter, The Elephant Man, Raging Bull, and Tess for the 1981 Academy Award (for 1980 films) .
Best Actor:  Robert DeNiro won for Raging Bull (1980 film).
Best Actress:  Sissy Spacek won for Coal Miner's Daughter (1980 Film).

Country Music:  Barbara Mandrell was named Entertainer of the Year.  "I Believe in You" by Don Williams won Album of the Year.  "He Stopped Loving Her Today" by Bobby Braddock won Song of the Year.
