Grade 6. The
sixth grade begins a
two-year middle school
concept, viewed as a
stepping stone in
preparation for the
Upper School program. Students are given more
responsibilities yet are
still provided stability
and nurturing through
the Lower School
program. While students
also receive instruction
in science and world
history, great emphasis
is placed on language
arts and mathematics.

The reading
program utilizes
the EMC Paradigm
Literature and
the Elements of
Writing English
series. The
Accelerated
Reading Program
is incorporated
into the
classroom as
well.
Mathematics covers the basic math functions related to whole numbers, fractions, and decimals, plus a study of geometry. The new mathematics curriculum also includes data analysis, statistics, probability, ratio, proportion, percent, integers, and algebraic expressions and equations.
World history encompasses ancient and modern world culture studies. Class extensions include hands-on projects, such as a simulated archeology dig and African mask making.
The science curriculum ranges from the rain forests to volcanoes to electricity.
Resource classes include physical education each day as well as weekly instruction in computer, art, library, music, and Spanish. Field trips taken throughout the year often coordinate with a unit of study. Trips in the past have included visits to the Virginia Science Museum and local theater productions. An annual Virginia Beach field trip focuses on the Virginia Marine Aquarium and a dolphin watching excursion.
Students are encouraged to be good citizens as well. Community service activities throughout the year include writing letters to troops overseas and sponsoring a family for Christmas. The class also participates in devotions and monthly chapel services. During this year, students mature dramatically as they approach adolescence. It is our goal to instill in each student the confidence and tools for success as they prepare for Upper School.
